Sarah started her career with the insurance giant Norwich Union (now Aviva) and worked her way up into management, ironically, moving into the Healthcare / Private Medical Insurance sector. Sarah also worked for the NHS where she gained valuable insight into primary healthcare in Sheffield. She now manages everything from top-to-bottom at Sheffield Therapy Centre from the legal stuff to making an awesome brew! Basically, everything except the clinical therapy.
On a personal level Sarah’s life is centred around her one and only son – you can’t improve on perfection so she stuck to one. He’s a keen footballer and this strikes her diary out almost completely along with her husband Mark (physio) and Cockerpoo, Milo. Combine a little Prosecco, Rose wine and a giant bag of peanut M & M’s and she’s good as gold. With all the waiting around she squeezes in Spanish on the Duolingo app and wholeheartedly recommends swimming to clear the mind and get the ticker going. Sarah loves football too so is always glued to a match somewhere. Sarah is tremendously clumsy and is lucky to be married to a physio to fix her.
Mark entered the world of Physiotherapy as a mature student, more years ago than he would like to admit. Following a brief career in professional football at Doncaster Rovers, where injury forced early retirement, he was inspired to study at Huddersfield University to become a chartered physiotherapist due to his experiences as an injured footballer. To aid his studies and gain experience he worked for 3 years with the therapists at Huddersfield Town F.C. Academy. Following this he turned down the opportunity to work in professional football, in order to further his knowledge base working for the NHS. After graduation he went on to work at Rotherham General Hospital and worked his way up to be a Senior Physiotherapist. Mark is our Head Sports Physio and has also worked as consultant physiotherapist to Sheffield Football Club, the world’s first football club. Mark can see any type of musculoskeletal problem but has a keen interest in sports injuries, particularly of the knee.
Mark is a keen runner and some would say with his arthritis and asthma he’s an inspiration to others that want to start exercising. As a sports physio, he is clearly interested in all sports – especially football. Watching, playing and coaching his son’s grassroots junior football league team takes up pretty much all of his spare time but has been a very enjoyable experience. He also enjoys comedy clubs, making a mess, fidgeting and boxing.
Matthew runs our regular Chiropody / Podiatry clinic every Friday morning. With over 20 years experience, he is confident there isn’t much he hasn’t seen in the way of foot health. He is registered with the Health Care Professions Council and his work is recognised by many insurers. A very hard working man indeed and our patients are guaranteed to benefit from his experience and treatment. Very little daylight in his diary due his loyal patients spreading the word so if you spot a gap, don’t delay.
Matt enjoys playing squash, and is a busy dad of three; there is never a dull moment with Matt. Friday morning clinic are certainly a highlight of our week in clinic having him around. A highly experience therapist and one that can also make a superb cup of tea. We love Matt.
SOPHIE HOYES
Sophie is a Senior Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist qualifying with first class honours degree. She is interested in finding the cause of an injury or problem, and utilising her skills and knowledge to achieve patient goals and improve outcomes. She is also qualified in sports massage so can help with those tight muscles.
Sophie is a keen cricketer through the summer months, and football occupies her time throughout the winter. Running has also become a hobby to fill the tiny amount of spare time she might have and completed the London Marathon in 2023. She has had a go at lots of sports and thrives off being in the outdoors to get the endorphins flowing.
LUKE SAUNDERS
As well as 1 to 1 therapy Luke has run rehab classes of the upper limb, lower limb, spines and ACL reconstructions so he has an all round fantastic knowledge base. He is passionate about helping patients achieve their goals both in clinic “hands-on” and advising how they can speed up their progress with rehab at home should they wish.
A keen sportsman and very friendly chap, we’re confident Luke can help you with your pain or injury.
AYAT ABDO
Graduating from the University of Northampton with a BSc in Podiatry, she underwent rigorous clinical training. Currently pursuing a master’s degree, Ayat anticipates its completion soon. Recognised as the top clinical podiatry student in 2015/2016, Ayat achieved the highest grades in her practical exams. Additionally, she contributed to the podiatry care of athletes during the 2016 London Marathon.
With a keen interest in the Biomechanics of the foot and ankle, Ayat possesses expertise in prescribing and customizing orthotic devices.
A warm smile awaits!
The reason the clinic exists – Lucas Roe. When mum Sarah and Dad Mark struggled to fit work around a new premature baby, a new plan B was needed and Sheffield Therapy Centre was born. In the blink of an eye, he’s grown up fast!
He’s academically bright, super sporty and incredibly witty. He’s currently studying A Levels in Maths, Physics and Product Design as he is interested in a career in Engineering but these gigs and festivals don’t pay for themselves so is helping with book-keeping, administration, reception work and cleaning to earn some pennies.
Alongside his studies, Lucas plays college football to blow off steam from all that Quantum Physics malarkey. He’s also made one hell of a comeback from a horror football injury he suffered which required ACL reconstruction in 2022, aged just 15. He showed such mental and physical strength to overcome it the way he did and we’re so proud of him. He really is the epitome of resilience and determination. We’re incredibly proud of his commitment to his rehab and how he followed his physiotherapy programme. ACL injuries require you to DO physio not just have it and he certainly did that in heaps. He’s an inspiration to anyone suffering this injury and how committing to rehab ensures a successful comeback to sport. His work isn’t finished there though – it’s a lifetime commitment to keep both knees and body strong to support him playing competitive football.
In tough times, you have to find little snippest of positives to cling on to and we found Liam Gallagher’s “Too Good For Giving Up” song such a soother to the wound we all had as a family and it became our family anthem to help carry us through. Cheers Liam.
WHAT PATIENTS SAY
“I was playing football at a high standard before I had to have numerous injuries in my knee. As a result, I started to fall out with the game and finally underwent an ACL reconstruction which required several months of intense physio. Mark couldn’t have been more helpful putting me with Lee one of his work colleagues who specialises in ACL Rehab to help me strengthen and regain movement in my knee plus recovering my fitness. It was a tough process, but now I am back to playing my football again and most of all enjoying it! This couldn’t have been achieved without the hard work, time and guidance Mark and his team gave me – so for that, I really owe them one”.
