Specialist Joint & Soft Tissue Injections
Joint pain can be frustrating, debilitating and disruptive to everyday life. Whether it’s affecting your ability to walk, work, exercise or sleep, you want access to effective treatment without unnecessary delays.
Our specialist injection clinic offers two main types of injection therapy:
Corticosteroid (Steroid) Injections
Designed to reduce inflammation and associated pain, corticosteroid injections can provide relatively rapid relief for a range of joint and soft tissue conditions. Some patients notice improvement within days, although the full effect may take one to two weeks.
Hyaluronic Acid Injections – eg Ostenil® Plus
Used for selected patients with osteoarthritis, hyaluronic acid injections aim to improve joint lubrication and relieve symptoms. Results are generally more gradual, developing over several weeks, with benefits varying between individuals.
Not sure which injection you need? That’s what your assessment is for. We’ll discuss the available options and recommend treatment only where clinically appropriate.
What Conditions Do We Treat?
We assess and treat a wide range of joint, tendon and soft tissue conditions, including:
Arthritis & Joint Pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Knee pain
- Shoulder pain
- Wrist pain
- Hand, finger and thumb pain
- Toe and ankle pain
- Heel pain
- Acromioclavicular (AC) joint pain
Tendon & Soft Tissue Conditions
- Frozen shoulder
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Trigger finger

Every condition is different. Your suitability for injection therapy will depend on your diagnosis, symptoms and medical history. If you have a problem not mentioned, please call us on 01142390022 and we’ll see what we can do.
Please note: We do not offer spinal injections and not every patient is suitable for an injection.

Your Appointment – What to Expect
1. Medical Screening
Before your appointment, we’ll send you a detailed medical screening form covering your health history, medication and previous injections. This allows Sarah to review your suitability in advance.
2. Thorough Clinical Assessment
At your appointment, Sarah will assess the affected area, discuss your symptoms and review your treatment options. An injection will only be recommended if clinically appropriate.
3. Treatment & Aftercare
If suitable, Sarah will explain the benefits, risks and alternatives before obtaining your consent. As an independent prescriber, she can prescribe the appropriate medication and carry out your treatment.
The procedure is generally quick. The area is cleaned using appropriate aseptic technique, local anaesthetic may be used, and a fine needle delivers the medication into the affected joint or soft tissue.
Ultrasound guidance may be used where clinically appropriate. Please ask us about availability and our premium upgrade option.
You’ll receive comprehensive aftercare advice, and with your consent, we’ll also write to your GP to keep them informed.
Important: Not everyone is suitable for injection therapy. If an injection isn’t appropriate, we’ll explain why and advise on the most suitable alternatives. In this situation, you’ll only be charged for a consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with Sheffield Therapy Centre without a GP referral. If you’re using private medical insurance, please check whether your insurer requires GP authorisation or pre-approval. Please note that we do not offer direct billing arrangements with insurers and all treatments must be paid for by the patient. We can provide a detailed receipt for you to submit a claim to your insurer.
Can I have an injection at my first appointment?
Potentially, yes. If your medical screening and clinical assessment confirm that an injection is appropriate, treatment may be possible at your first appointment. However, this is not a walk-in injection service – a full clinical assessment is always required first.
How quickly do injections work?
This depends on the type of injection and the condition being treated.
Corticosteroid injections can start to reduce pain within a few days, with the full effect often taking one to two weeks. Hyaluronic acid injections generally work more gradually, with improvement potentially developing over several weeks.
Individual responses vary, and pain relief, as with any procedure, cannot be guaranteed.
Are steroid and joint injections safe?
Both are established treatments when used appropriately, but all injections carry potential risks.
Temporary soreness, bruising and a short-term flare-up in symptoms can occur. More serious complications, such as infection, are uncommon but possible.
Sarah will explain the specific risks, benefits and alternatives before treatment.
For further information:
What’s the difference between steroid and Ostenil injections?
Steroid injections aim to reduce inflammation and associated pain, often providing relatively quick relief.
Ostenil Plus contains hyaluronic acid and is used in selected cases of osteoarthritis. It aims to improve joint lubrication and symptoms, with benefits generally developing more gradually.
Sarah will advise which treatment, if either, is suitable for you.
Is everyone suitable for an injection?
No. Your medical history, medication, previous treatments and clinical findings are carefully reviewed before any injection is considered. If treatment isn’t appropriate, we’ll explain why and discuss alternative options.
How much do injections cost?
Our joint and soft tissue injection appointments start from £170.
The final cost depends on the treatment required and whether ultrasound guidance is selected.
Please see our Make Appointment page for the full price list.

WHAT PATIENTS SAY
“I had a fall in Chesterfield and landed badly on my knee. To cut things short I was under the hospital, who after numerous visits told me the best thing he could offer me, was Crutches!! I was told it was my Lupus causing the problem and I was discharged. I went to see Mark Roe and within half an hour he had diagnosed the problem and referred me to Barlborough for an operation. I can’t begin to say how grateful I am to Mark, he is a credit to his profession. It is just a pity that there are not people like mark running our hospitals. All too often people with Lupus are fobbed of with the excuse that the problem lies with the Lupus, when it is so-called experts not doing their jobs correctly”.
